80% AR Lowers
An 80% lower is a paperweight.
It is the beginning of a "firearm" as defined by BATFE, but it is a hole or two or a bit of milling short of making it to "Firearm", so - for legal purposes, it is a paperweight. A novelty. A meat tenderizer.
If you ever decide to finish the drilling/milling/cutting, you'll have the foundation for a weapon - in this case an AR. Drop in the lower parts kit, stock, add an upper, insert magazine and go to work.
This is NOT a III Arms product. Miller is focusing on finished firearms and completely milled lowers (which have the proper BATFE markings and require your FFL to be involved.) A picture of Miller's III Arms lower is below.
WireCutter has teamed up with a company that is offering 80s. As Martha would say, it's a good thing. You should have spares. You should have options.
This is a good option.

Their price of $200 is more than 2x Stag's wholesale for a completed lower. Incidentally it is about the going rate for a lower in my AO. Why not save the hassle and purchase a complete lower from a private party for the same price?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Some people like the idea of building it themselves without a 4473 and the paper trail.

K, I guess if folks want to do some of the work with their own hands that makes sense. As to the paper trail that is why I said PRIVATE PARTY. Private party means no 4473 or paper trail and is legal in most of the US.
DeleteAgreed - in most places a private citizen (not otherwise a Prohibited Person) may build their own firearm without advising BATFE so long as they never, ever sell or give it away. This is a way to build a firearm that has no paper history - a potential advantage.
DeleteCheck you state laws, and everything else that needs a disclaimer - I'm not going to jail for you folks. ;)
But I would advise folks to watch the quiet laws and regulations at BATFE regarding constructive possession. That is a VERY ill-defined law, and they can move that line at whim. It will not be long that owning an 80% lower and a hobby CNC with the code to finish your lower will be considered "Constructive Possession." Trust me on this, folks - I have been in those crosshairs.
Vote with your feet. Leave Maryland, New York, DC, Cali, Illinois, Colorado.
