Underestimate the wrong person at your peril...
In my experience men tend to rely on Ego and strength. Women are far better technicians in the arts, because they have no choice - they can't over-power the average attacker, they must execute technique properly.
Yes, I always grin when I watch the surprised guy tapping out when he never thought it could happen.
Is this piece choreographed? Only to a degree. You'll notice that as the lass begins to climb the guy like a ladder she throws a knee at his head. He has 2 choices - take the knee in the ear or defend himself by leaning back - which she uses to continue climbing and executing her leg lock. You'll also notice that at the end she has his arm trapped beneath her body for an elbow lock as well. You see him throw himself into a forward roll that may look choreographed - but it is a defensive move. If he didn't dive into a forward roll, he's got an 85 pound gal hanging from his neck with a leg lock in place...with her hands in perfect position to make wine with his grapes.
Dude's in trouble. ;)
A good fight can look remarkably like an elegant dance...

He clearly assists in lifting her with his right arm. If he wanted to stop her, he would have pushed her out instead of lifting her up. That would have protected his ear better than letting her pull him down with her legs around his head, and it would have had the side benefit of dropping her on her back from 5' up. It is artistic and athletic, but not a good move unless the opponent cooperates. Kind of like some professional wrestling moves.
ReplyDeleteHe couldn't push her with his right arm, it was fully extended from the punch she side-stepped, and then she was climbing. (His left arm was out of position to push her) He wasn't "lifting" as much as she was taking advantage of his innate retraction of the arm to a defensive posture - the technique utilizes the innate defensive reactions that "most" people will default to in similar circumstances. He was "recovering" his right arm, and she took advantage.
DeleteIn Aiki many throws are only possible by the attacker's "cooperation" in moving in a manner expected by the defender. If the attacker reacts differently, another technique develops.
His only real defense with that extended right arm would have been to wrap her up and tumble with her to the ground using their combined centripital momentum in the same direction and hope his ground skills are better than hers. A retreat was out of the question, she was already climbing. In his posture and her momentum and line of attack she could have just as easily acquired a rear choke rather than the more exciting leg lock.
But yes, it was obviously more technical display than combat, neither actually wanted to end the other. They weren't scoring or going for a tap.
Most men would be best to shoot this gal before letting her get close, if she's pissed. ;)
