Some of you will know this answer - all of the .40 S&W rounds can't simply be for handguns carried by SWATers. Does anyone know what agencies have large numbers of .40 S&W SMG's?
My point: A .40 S&W SMG is a tactical entry weapon, used for Stacks, not open field engagements.
That is a clue to the battle plan of the enemy - they plan on close range no-knock tactics.
So: Anyone know what agencies have .40 SMGs and quantities and brands?

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the FBI are the agencies getting the lion's share of .40 ammunition.

Neither the FBI or ICE have enough people to use this quantity of ammunition for the effect that people are speculating. The only reason so much tactical entry ammunition is needed is either for gun confiscation or for rounding people up for internment camps. These rounds would have to be passed down to every SWAT team in the country unless the DHS is building a para-military force separate from its sub-agencies.
So you guys agree with me that the likely purpose of the .40 ammo is SMG use by entry teams?
ReplyDeleteI can't come up with any other viable actions. But it also surprises me a bit - If *I* were on a stack, I wouldn'y want .40, I'd want 5.56.
So why not 5.56? The only answer I come up with there is over-penetration that will result in collateral damage - which tells me that, at least for a while, they will care about how it looks.

I think a UMP will hide easier than a 556 carbine unless it's really small, especially until one is up to a door with a side folded stock versus, say, an 11" AR with a collapsed stock would. Plus, the 556 would be a lot louder indoors with such a short barrel versus a UMP with a longer than pistol length barrel.
